What We Trade

Our Products

More Than Seaweed, We Trade Functional Ingredients

Raw seaweed is only the beginning. Through processing and refinement, tropical seaweed becomes industrial ingredients with defined specifications and functional performance. Java Sea supplies these value-added derivatives directly from Indonesian processors to customers worldwide.

The Origin

Understanding Tropical Seaweed

Indonesia’s unique geography provides the ideal environment for cultivating tropical seaweed at a scale unmatched anywhere in the world.

Marine Algae

Seaweed is marine algae — a plant that grows in the ocean without roots, drawing nutrients directly from seawater. It is classified by colour: green, brown, and red. Each colour group has different chemical properties and industrial uses.

Tropical Environment

Tropical seaweed grows in warm, shallow, high-salinity waters close to the equator — where sunlight is intense, water temperature is consistently above 25°C, and currents are strong enough to circulate nutrients. These conditions cannot be replicated at industrial scale outside the tropics.

Indonesia's Advantage

Indonesia sits at the centre of this band. With 81,000 kilometres of tropical coastline across more than 17,000 islands, it produces more tropical seaweed than any other country.

Value Creation

What Are Tropical Seaweed Derivatives

A tropical seaweed derivative is the refined product created after extraction and processing. Unlike raw seaweed, derivatives are manufactured to meet precise chemical properties and functional specifications required by modern industries.

Raw seaweed is traded as a commodity by weight. Seaweed derivatives are traded by performance, consistency, and application—where greater value is created.

Product Categories

Types Of Tropical Seaweed Derivatives

Different seaweed species produce different hydrocolloids, each serving unique industrial applications.

Carrageenan

Extracted from red seaweed (Kappaphycus and Eucheuma). Widely used as a thickener, stabilizer, and gelling agent in food manufacturing.

Agar

Produced from red seaweed and commonly applied in food processing, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory media.

Alginate

Derived from brown seaweed for applications across food, textiles, pharmaceutical, and industrial manufacturing.

Our Product

Carrageenan For Consistent Industrial Performance

Carrageenan is a natural hydrocolloid extracted from red seaweed — a substance that, when dispersed in water, controls the texture and stability of the solution it is added to. It is a sulfated polysaccharide found in the cell wall of the plant. When extracted and dried it becomes a powder used as a functional ingredient in food manufacturing.

There are two types of carrageenan relevant to industrial food production:

Kappa-carrageenan

Extracted from Kappaphycus alvarezii (cottonii). Forms a firm, brittle gel. Used in dairy, meat processing, and plant-based products.

Iota-carrageenan

Extracted from Eucheuma denticulatum (spinosum). Forms a soft, elastic gel. Used in dairy desserts, processed meat, and personal care.

Industrial Carrageenan Solutions For Different Needs

Carrageenan thickens, stabilises, and gels water-based food systems. It prevents dairy products from separating, binds water in processed meat, and gives plant-based products the texture consumers expect from animal protein. It is used in dairy, meat processing, plant-based alternatives, infant formula, confectionery, and pet food.

Semi-Refined Carrageenan (SRC / E407a)

The industry's most widely used carrageenan, offering reliable performance with efficient processing costs. Available in both Kappa and Iota grades and currently supplied by Java Sea.

Refined Carrageenan (RC / E407)

A higher-purity grade produced through additional filtration for applications requiring exceptional consistency, including premium dairy and pharmaceutical products. Planned as Java Sea's next product offering.

Our Sources

How We Source It

Java Sea sources carrageenan exclusively from Indonesian processors — not intermediaries, not re-exporters, not trading houses that aggregate from multiple origins.

Every supplier is qualified directly. Factory visits. Farm visits. Product samples tested against specification — gel strength, viscosity, moisture content, ash levels. Full certification review: Halal, food safety, traceability documentation from farm to shipment.

We do not move product we have not verified at source.

This is not a compliance checkbox. It is the only model consistent with what Java Sea claims to be — a company that knows exactly where its product comes from, because it was there.

Our Commitment

Quality You Can Verify At Every Step

Every lot we trade is verified against full specification before it moves:

Physical & Chemical Parameters Gel strength, viscosity, moisture content, ash levels — tested at source, documented per lot via Certificate of Analysis.

Certifications HACCP and ISO 22000 food safety compliance. Halal (BPJPH) and Kosher certified. All supplier certifications current and verifiable.

Traceability Full chain from farm to shipment — farm, processor, harvest cycle documented at every step. Certificate of Origin and Health Certificate issued per shipment.
